Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

 WHAT IS CBT?

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, also called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT, is a form of psychological therapy. Over recent years many research studies have shown CBT to be the most effective treatment for many psychological problems. For this reason CBT is sometimes referred to as "evidence-based psychology" or "evidence-based practice", as in most cases the therapy techniques have been proven to be effective by research evidence.

CBT addresses the emotions, behaviour, thoughts, and beliefs behind psychological difficulties.  Unlike many counselling approaches, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy focuses on teaching individuals practical techniques to manage and overcome their psychological problems.  Many different techniques are utilised depending on the types of problems a person is experiencing.  Some examples of these techniques include: training in recognising and challenging negative thoughts and beliefs, desensitisation techniques, relaxation therapy, training in problem-solving approaches, etc.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) has been found to be an effective treatment for many psychological problems, such as depression, generalised anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety, anger control problems, body image disorders, specific phobias, trauma or abuse reactions, insomnia and many other psychological problems problems.  CBT is also commonly used to help individuals with chronic pain, adjustment difficulties following the diagnosis of major illnesses or other life changes, irritable bowel syndrome, weight management, etc.

HOW LONG IS THERAPY?

CBT is usually a short term treatment.  Many individuals overcome their problems or experience significant improvements within 6 to 10 hours of therapy.  However the number of sessions required will depend upon your circumstances.  Your treating professional may be able to provide an estimate of treatment duration following an initial assessment interview.

WHO PROVIDES CBT?

Many Clinical Psychologists have expertise in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. A Clinical Psychologist is someone who has undergone basic training to become a psychologist plus an additional 2 years of full-time University training in Clinical Psychology. These two years of postgraduate study usually involve specialised training and experience in the use of CBT.
Some other professionals, such as psychiatrists and other psychologists, may have expertise in CBT.

WHAT ABOUT MEDICATIONS?

For many people Cognitive Behaviour Therapy alone is sufficient to address their problems.   However some people may require a combination of CBT and medication.  This is something they should discuss with their General Practitioner, or specialist if they are consulting one.
